Marketing may have been the furthest thing from your mind when you first studied to become a yoga instructor. Back then, your dreams were, no doubt, consumed by the aesthetics of your yoga studio and the types of classes you’d offer.

Yet, as you will have likely learned early on, marketing is integral to the ongoing success of your practice. Yoga is a competitive industry, and you need to work hard to encourage people to roll out a mat in your studio — not the new one that’s opened up down the road. No wonder over half (58%) of boutique fitness studio owners believe that growing competition is making it harder to attract and retain members.

But let’s face it. Knowing where to start in taking your marketing to the next level can be hard. Don’t worry, we’ve got you. Here are six key marketing strategies to keep in mind as you grow your business.

1. Know who you’re reaching out to

Every successful marketing strategy starts with one thing: a clear understanding of the target market. You may already have a pretty good idea of the types of people who love your classes — things like their average age and their gender, for example. But do you know what motivates them to practice yoga? What holds them back from practicing more? Or what do they hope to achieve through their practice? If you don’t know, ask them, either casually after classes or more formally via a survey.

As well as profiling the people who already come to your classes, think about the types of people who aren’t coming — but who you’d like to attract. Perhaps there’s a certain demographic (like, new mothers or older citizens) who you’d love to teach yoga to. For these groups, do your research into their typical motivations and goals for doing yoga, and then start crafting your marketing content accordingly.

3. Strengthen ties with your community

Relationships are at the heart of your practice and your yoga studio. To nurture these — and to create new ones — explore ways you can offer more than just your regular suite of classes.

For example, you could host events or workshops at your yoga studio. Think day-long retreats that combine a delicious mix of gentle yoga, meditation, nutritious foods, and chai. Or educational classes that enrich your students’ understanding of the many layers of yoga practice. Such events can help you build community and create word-of-mouth buzz around your brand.

Or, you could host member get-togethers outside your studio, in places that align with your studio’s brand values. You could head out into nature, for example, or perhaps screen an international film.

4. Explore partnerships to boost your brand

To help you reach a wider audience, you could explore opportunities to partner with like-minded businesses, brands, or influencers. For example, you could reach out to nearby spas, wellness centres or organic cafes, and develop joint product offerings. Or, you could offer your yoga services at community events like fairs and festivals, and hold free classes to boost awareness of your business.

To further extend your reach and grow awareness of your brand, find out if there are industry events — not just for yoga, but in the wellness industry more broadly — that you can attend either as a guest or guest speaker. Such events are a great way to network with other professionals within the industry and increase your exposure.

5. Offer incentives and promotions to boost loyalty

Everyone — even the most devoted yogis — love to feel special. What could you offer your clients to build that sense and loyalty to keep them coming back?

For example, you could offer membership discounts for those who attend regular classes. Or you could offer free trials to those who are yet to commit to your studio. Or perhaps a referral program, where members receive a discount off their next class when they refer a friend or family member.

6. Free your time with studio management software

When you’re flat out managing your yoga studio – from onboarding members, scheduling classes, and engaging new yoga instructors, it can be hard to find the time to think about — let alone implement — your marketing strategy.

This is where a more holistic yoga studio management solution can help. With the right yoga studio software humming away behind the scenes, you can free up your time to focus on nurturing relationships, exploring new growth opportunities, and really engaging with new and prospective members.
